Living in Love
by Danielle Daoust
I have come to understand that Love is the most powerful - and perhaps the most mysterious and misunderstood - force in our lives... and I know now that love is not so much a feeling as it is a way of living and being in the world.... a way of being in relationship with all of life...
Love is indeed, a mystical experience... Love can turn conflict to peace, pain to joy, fear to comfort...
But most folks see love as a kind of goal, something they are waiting to have happen to them... Most of us are filled with romantic, idealistic beliefs about what love is - and as a result end up feeling let down by love - and of course, life.
Yet love is all around us... there for the taking... if we approach life with a loving, giving and grateful attitude... Love is indeed a force that can change your life - when you embrace your world with a loving attitude... and this attitude can indeed attract the kind of romantic love that most humans hope for. But as anyone who has found their right partner will tell you, the romance is only one aspect of true love... and all the others can make the romance pale in comparison. While there is no replacement for the sense of completion that comes from loving your right partner, there are so many glorious ways that we express and receive love in life...
Perhaps it is time to rethink our beliefs about what is love. To love requires courage and steadfastness, a willingness to love no matter what... but the rewards cannot be described... Here are some thoughts to help you reevaluate what is love:.
Consider Love's "ugly" side first:
Love is the gratitude that blesses your life when a complete stranger offers a helping hand... you don't care about colour, or race, or creed, you are grateful, you are loved and can give thanks!
Love is that sense of purpose that drives you to action, even when you are tired and exhausted by the struggle... you love, so you see purpose in your pain!
Love is the inspiration that urges you to stand back from a fight, the understanding that lights up your eyes in the midst of a conflict, despite your hurt and frustration.... .in love, you find the balance to be fair, to see the truth on both sides, to have compassion... in love you can be grateful for the lesson, and the growth... even in your anger!
Now consider Love's softer, warmer side
Love is that feeling you get when the dog licks your face and settles into your lap for a good cuddle... doesn't matter that you scolded her 15 minutes ago for chewing your shoes... you love her all the same...
Love is that glow that shines from your face when your little one first says, "Mommie, I wuv you"... you don't care that her face is covered in your best lipstick... you love her all the more....
Love is that sweet pleasure that tickles your heart as you watch your mate of 60 years fix your morning coffee... you don't see the wrinkles or the old robe... she's still the love of your life....
Love is that quiet joy in you as you sip your tea in the garden, flowers bobbing in the breeze on a sunny afternoon.... you are happy your knees hurt and proud of the dirt under your nails.... you are in love, you are in life!
Love gets you up in the morning, gets you moving on your goals, inspires you to achieve and to make the most of yourself... and also to leave the space for those around you to make the most of themselves.
I think you see where I am going here... love is a lot bigger than those romantic novels would have you believe... love is about living with purpose and gratitude, in love with your world... love is about embracing life, appreciating the relationships that help us to learn and grow... love is about nurturing, balance and accountability... and then, yes, love is about romance, hearts and flowers, passion and togetherness... and mystical experience.
Kahlil Gibran, in the Prophet perfectly describes what I am on about here.
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you,
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do to unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught, but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Loves possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather. "I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worth, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully,
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with a gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
Kahlil Gibran, the Prophet, published by Alfred A. Knopf, 1964
When I look up The Lovers card in the tarot, I see that this card speaks to the need to make wise choices in life... and love... a time when values are being put to the test... it implies the need to look carefully at the implications of one's choices, rather than being driven blindly (by your gonads, or the pheremones, your need, your fears or whatever...)... it speaks to an initiation by fire... and the need to understand how we are the creator of our lives... the Lovers reminds us that the consequences of our choices in love are enormous, for they affect all levels of our life. Desire for another forces the development of individual values and self-knowledge through the messes and conflicts which arise from our choices... for which we are ultimately responsible...
Excerpt from the Swami's Nov 30/2004 newsletter: Swami's Top 11 Reasons to Be Thankful This Year by Swami Beyondananda:
1. We're All in This Together. The number one thing we have going for us is our Oneness. Religion hints at it, and science has proved it. We're all related. Instead of commemorating separation and attack as we do with 9/11, let's celebrate 1/11 this January 11th and take a pledge that will definitely move us from the Age of Nefarious to the Age of Aquarius: One. One. One. .
One One One Credo
One Spirit, many paths.
One Earth, great diversity.
One Humanity, each of us totally unique just like everyone else.
Under Father Sky
On Mother Earth
We are Family in all our relations
In all Creation
Let the Golden Rule rule
In each heart and every nation

Love and Gratitude... Gratitude is a way of expressing love, showing that we understand the value in each experience... I can't tell you how often a problem has simply disappeared once I saw the purpose in it, accepted - and was GRATEFUL - for the lesson...
Loving and Listening: Listening is a function of the heart... It is our fear and anxiety about being hurt, rejected, unloved and unlovable that prevents us from listening - and thus also seeing clearly. When we can put our fears and our egos aside, when being right is overruled by doing what is right, it becomes much easier to work through relationship... to listen actively, with an open heart, to build rewarding, fulfilling relationships. To create a Space of Love that touches many souls….start by listening, with an open heart.
